Photo Editing Software Suggestions

Hi I am currently looking for a Semi-Pro photo editing software, iPhoto is too simple for me now, however Aperture and Lightroom are way to Pro for me, and the $299 price tag is over my budget. I am not a professional photographer by the way. I had decided on Photoshop Elements 4, but apparently it is slow and does not work well on Intel based Mac's due to the fact that it is not Universaly Binary.

Does anyone have any suggestions on other programs out there???
