Photo editors? Mac Paint? Something?

Doesn't mac come with a free thingy to edit photos and such? And I don't mean that crappy iPhoto. Something like Microsoft Paint. I can't edit anything! Microsoft paint sucked yes but it at least allowed you to do the simple basics. I just wanna make an avatar and edit/crop/resize a photo as a GIF and iPhoto is about all I can find. And it sucks... You can't really custom resize or crop and you can't export as a GIF...

I am gonna get a real editor/art program but I just want something simple to just make a simple avatar and stuff...

I'm brand new to my mac btw... I love it but this is beyond annoying.
 
I'm sorry I'm a duche... I opened stuff in preview and I thought thats exactly what it was.. a preview... photo viewer etc. I'm still adjusting to the menu bar opening in the top main bar rather than the actual window you open.

Come on, that's what the forums are there for. Asking and getting an answer :)
 
Skitch is also nice. It lets you highlight things and paint a little. Plus you can upload it directly to the internet.

I was so pissed when I got my mac and found out that the only thing Picasa offers mac users, is a web album. A place to upload your photos.

Grrr... Since then I've grown to love iPhoto and Aperture 2, even though the latter was a bit pricey, it was worth it.

I also use the Picasa webalbum though. I use Gmail..so I figured, why the heck not. Got a nice iPhoto to Picasa upload plugin too.
