EDIT: Perhaps this question would be better put in the "Design and Graphics" section?

To cut a long story short, I’m looking for a simple but powerful photo layout program - not Photoshop or Quark; something quick & basic (with alignment & text tools) possibly like iScrapbook. Anyone have any suggestions or used iScrapbook (I can’t demo it on my old :apple: as it runs 10.3)?

The longer story… I’m in the process of switching my rather computer-illiterate Dad away from his ancient PC to an iMac. He works a lot from home so my main concern is ensuring he’ll be able to work equally as well on the iMac (hopefully better). :)

Writing emails & letters etc will be no problem. But 90% of his work involves taking photos (tons at a time), applying basic edits & printing them with short captions. This is where I need help because iPhoto is no good at custom print layouts with text (unless I’ve missed a function).

Currently he uses Canon PhotoRecord which, if you ignore all the cheesy effects/clipart features, is an excellent layout program. PhotoRecord lets you simply drag a load of photos on to the page, it then automatically aligns them (configured by columns & rows), you add text & then click print. Simple! PhotoRecord is very basic in its approach but this simplicity makes it a very powerful tool.

So I need a replacement for PhotoRecord. I’ve been looking at the following products & I’d appreciate some advice…

  • Pages
  • Swift Publisher
  • Comic Life
  • iScrapbook
  • ArcSoft PhotoPrinter

My old iMac runs 10.3 so I can’t demo most of the above but iScrapbook looks the most promising so far. Comic Life (if customised to give more professional results) also seems very good. I think Pages would be too complicated for the task, the app I'm looking for needs to be simple & quick to use but please correct me if I'm wrong.

Does anyone have any experience with iScrapbook or can anyone suggest any other products I should consider?

Many thanks!

:)
