Photo manipulation?

Let me preface this: I know nothing!
That said, I have I-Photo on my IMac...it does not offer me the opportunity to manipulate my photos to the extent that I would like (Elimimating areas, masking, etc). Are there any FREE downloads that are Mac compatable that offer me some tools?
