Hi

I have been lurking for a while but finally decided to register and post because I am in need of a photo or picture manager that

* Does NOT require import of files (so cannot iphoto)
* Supports thumbnail views for browsing
* The ability to batch rename
* Crop and resize would be nice but not essential - if they are missing there needs to be a 'send to external editor' feature

iPhoto, Aperture both require i import. An older version of photoshop elements also did (is that still the case?). Picasa also does. Acdsee for Mac doesn't, but it slow, terrible interface, buggy and expensive. I would prefer not to have to use it.

iPhoto does not need to import photos to manage them:

I don't know if it supports batch renaming though, but it fulfills the rest of your wishes.

With iPhoto, you can change your preferences to add photos to the library without having it manage or copy the files.
Preview can crop and resize quite easily.
Name Mangler can easily batch rename files.

I do not want to have to import the photos or their thumbnails into the photo manager's library.

I just want to browse to a folder and go.

iPhoto cannot do this. It adds an extra step to the workflow.

I don't want to sound ungrateful but I can actually use google.

I was hoping that someone here has actually used the programs and can provide some recommendations.

I've already mentioned Picasa and ACDsee in the original post.

PhotoMechanic is great browsing non-ingesting photo manager with tons of functionality. It's a bit pricey, but think it has a 30 day trial so you can see if it is worth it.
