Several of my family members live in the country and only have dial-up internet access. So I was looking for the best way to send them reduced-size photos.
In Mail if the size selector at the bottom right is "Actual Size" then the email is about 2.5MB (for one photo from my camera).
So I selected "Medium" which is a bit small but not too bad, but it is still 730kB for a 640x480 photo. Even the tiny "Small" picture is still 220kB! Why are the file sizes so big? Shouldn't a 640x480 picture be 50 or 60kB? There doesn't seem to be a JPEG quality setting in Mail that I could find.
Then I looked at iPhoto to see how I can resize photos for email. The only way appears to be to Export them and then you can set the image size and JPEG quality. The 640x480 picture was 72kB using Medium JPEG quality. Exporting it as a 960x720 (a nice visual size for an email IMO) the file was still only 220kB.
Any idea why Apple chose such big file sizes for small photos in Mail? It seems very odd to me since you generally shrink photos in emails so they don't take too long to send (or receive), or bounce due to mailbox size.
Why doesn't Mail have the JPEG quality and Max Dimensions control that iPhoto does? Then you could have finer control over the file size and image size.
Thanks - Greg
