Hey folks!
Now that the M1 Mac Mini has 10GbE I'm giving some serious consideration to upgrading my current desktop setup.
I currently use a 2016 MacBook Pro 15" as both a laptop and a desktop replacement. I don't need a new 'laptop', everything I do on the go my current MBP excels at. So I'm not in the market for an M1 laptop.
The one place my MBP does struggle a bit is Adobe Lightroom (which is a hog) and FCPX, when working with high resolution files on high resolution displays (currently hooked up to 2x 4K panels).
On paper, the M1 Mac Mini is faster in every way than my 2016 MacBook Pro. According to benchmarks I've found, even it's integrated GPU is faster than my AMD 460 Pro in my MacBook Pro.
The question I have, is is it fast enough? I'd actually like to have a dedicated desktop for doing photo and video editing. I don't do it professionally, I don't do it every day, a Mac Pro is out of the question and just not worth it. Those of you doing this kind of work with 4k or 5.4k video and high resolution (42MP in my case) DSLR/MILC photos, is an M1 Mac Mini worth it? Is it performing at a level that you think is sufficient? Even though it's faster on paper, would I actually find myself with smooth and snappy operation of FCPX and Lightroom or will I be right where I was except $1,200 or so poorer?
(Config I'm looking at: 8/8core, 16GB of RAM, 10GbE, 512GB SSD).
