photobooth effects not working

I was trying to take pictures with photobooth and the effects didn't work. All I could do was take normal pictures. None of the other effects from apple even showed up as options. Each one looked normal, and even after I pressed them still took normal pictures. Is there a fix for that?

Unusual. Try a restart.

I tried restarting the app and restarting my computer and it didn't change. My girlfriend is also having these problems, yet one of her friends is not.
