I'm liking iOS 10 so far, apart from one or two little buggy niggles that only seem to have surfaced around the GM stage, but I'm confused by the implementation of Photos and iCloud Photo Library considering something they did with Music in iOS 10
People like taking photos apparently. People have huge photo libraries on their phones. So much so that devices with smaller storage - even 64GB ones - are in some cases reporting "device full" making it impossible to take any further photos or videos until iCloud Photo Library (ICL) has crunched its numbers and offloaded as much as it can to the cloud. This is all well and good if you are near wifi but if - as in lots of cases I'm sure - you're nowhere near wifi you're stuck with an unusable camera phone. I wish Apple had implemented something similar to what they did with the Music App and allowed us to set a limit in Settings as to how much space Photos can take up before ICL takes over and offloads full versions to the cloud. Maybe to prevent users messing it up it could be set no lower than 10-20% of the device storage size to allow adequate space for optimised versions etc. Then also provide us with an option to use mobile data to offload these images and videos if we want to. This way once the photos storage hits the prescribed limit or the device fills up, whichever occurs sooner, ICL could use any available internet connection to begin offloading full res versions leaving optimised versions on the phone. In the case of the phone being full you'd still have a delay until you could use it again, but at least you would be able to use it.
I know data use could get quite high but all (I think) third party photo backup apps allow us to use mobile data. I can stream GB and GB worth of TV shows and movies via various media apps, but in 2016 I still can't offload a few hundred MB of photos to ICL in Apple's own app to free up space on my phone while taking photos of (for example) a family outing at the beach. Apple shouldn't be behind the curve on this, they should be out front pushing forward.
Apple's whole approach to the use of mobile data has me shaking my head and wondering why it's so two sided. On the one hand they'll happily let me stream a couple of 5GB movies via Netflix or Plex, or stream constantly for 24 hours on Apple Music, but won't allow me to upload a couple of hundred photos at a few MB each. Yes there's people who wouldn't want this, but I bet there's more who would want the option to use mobile data if they could. Even if it was only photos it allowed to be done this way not video.
Anyone agree or am I talking out of the hole in my butt again?
