The Photos app seems to be the only app I use regularly (other than Preview) which will quit entirely when closing the main window. Normal behaviour in macOS when closing a window is for the app to continue running in the background, and so I'm finding when I close the Photos app I sometimes forget this quits the app instead of simply closing it (the behaviour I have with every other app I use) and this can be frustrating at times, especially when I'm waiting for it to complete a large library update or upload (closing the window quits the app, therefore cancelling the update).

I do my best to remember to hide the app (Cmd+H) but I usually forget. Is there any way to change Photos' behaviour when clicking the red close button / closing the main window?

As far as I know, the answer is "no".
If you want Photos to "stay alive in the background", you have to "hide" it.
