Years ago I started using iPhoto and last year started using Aperture (set it to use my iPhoto library) and never had any noticeable issues.

When Photos app first came out with Photos.app Version 1.0 (205.34.0) Developer Beta (14D72i) everything seemed to work smoothly and I selected to optimize my Mac storage. This is for my late 2012 iMac. I'll also note I could've had an issue then but didn't notice.

One day while going through some media I noticed some images where showing up as a thumbnail and not a regular sized photo. I only noticed this by enlarging a photo and scrolling through my media with that view as from the normal thumbnail view all my media looks perfectly fine. The thumbnail sized media shows metadata when I get info for it such as location, camera, date and time but also shows a zero file size. Perplexed I tried exporting the pic and it says there was an error 1,019.

To investigate further I pulled up iPhoto and the image is there and shows correctly. I pulled up aperture and it says unsupported image format and shows a ton of images saying that. What in the world... To be clear Aperture did not show any media stating that prior to installing the first Photo build.

I tired to export from iPhoto to Photos and while it works it duplicates instead of replacing. Not an option since there's dozens of photos that this evidently happened to.

Since Photo Version 1.0 (206.23.0) March 12 update with 14D98 And even Version 1.0 (207.13.0) March 16 update with 14D105g Those images within Photos that only showed as a thumbnail in enlarged view now show a pixelated full size image with same metadata that's correct but still shows a zero file size.

I previously filed a bug report for this and incorrect photo count however was recently asked to submit a new report for that so also coming here for help as it's been weeks with no resolution. Also anyone having an issue with Photos saying you have let's say 35,000 media at beginning of sync and then less after the sync is finished the issue there is at beginning of sync it will include each individual photo within a burst but at the end of a sync (example look at all photos count) it'll say less because it counts a burst as one item regardless of how many pics were in that burst.

I do have a large library with over 35,000 media which is why I jumped on the photos.app bandwagon to sort and edit and cull on my mobile and yes I do have two time machine backups but I've taken hundreds since and prefer to fix this then working around it. I've also used CMD + Option and click repaired Photos and it didn't fix the issue.

Additional info: my iPad and iPhone don't even show the zero file size images and I've setup both as new with iOS 8.3 beta 3. I did a fresh install of Yosemite 10.10.3 14D105g on a MacBook Pro and it shows just like my iMac which is it'll show the pixelated images with zero file size.
