I just realized that when using the built-in photos app to edit photos (mainly to crop and to "auto enhance"), file size is significantly reduced. A simple photo snap, with no editing, is typically about 2 MB. But after running it through the app, it gets reduced to 696 KB. That explains why my prints from edited pictures don't look that great.

Any idea why the app does that? Why can't it keep the original file size? Just did a test on SnapSeed and it doesn't look like the file size is reduced.

Performing auto-enhance, rotate, or red-eye removal does not reduce the size of your photo.

Of course cropping is going to recede the size because cropping is the equivalent of cutting a photo with scissors down to a smaller size.

Other apps might still export at a higher resolution because they crop and then they re-enlarge the photo back to a bigger size. There is no gain in photo quality by doing this only larger photo size.
