Photos app - Which EXIF date is used for sorting?

Sorting through tons of photos to import into Photos App and noticed that images show two EXIF dates:

  • Date Time Digitized
  • Date Time Original

I assume that EXIF "Date Time Original" is used by Photos App to sort and index but wanted to verify that.

Also I have another question since there are some photos I am finding with NO EXIF date. So if there is no EXIF date when I import the image what date will it use? Creation? Modified?
