Loving the new camera system, however one thing I am a bit confused about, if you switch on the setting to capture photos outside the frame and then take a pic with the wide angle lens, isn’t it really just taking zoomed in ultra wide shot that can be zoomed out when editing the picture? That’s what it looks like in the editing mode unless Apple have made the transition between the two separate shots really smooth.

its taking the full width of the wide and then taking a little bit more from the ultra wide and then merging the ultrawide part onto the edges of the wide shot. ultimately you dont want to do this since the ultra wide is not as good of a lens as the wide, but a few slivers of it wont be too noticeable on a wide shot.

Is it really doing that though? The edges of an ultra wide photo tend to be slightly warped due the the width of the lens so sticking these bits around the edges of an existing photo taken with a different lens doesn’t sound like it would work, Are you sure that’s what happens?

Edit: Also as you mentioned the quality of the ultra wide lens isn’t as good, so there would be a difference in picture quality on the tacked on edges.

its not taking the far edges of the ultra wide, that would never line up up with the wide. its taking parts between the wide and ultrawide. the edges just past the wide dont immediately start hit, or even get close, to the edges of the ultra wide. i mean its going from about 25mm to 13mm. there is a long way to go before it would actually hit the edges of the ultra wide.

Ah ok got you. That’s a pretty impressive feat of hardware and software working together, it seems to work well from what I have seen so far.
