Now that Apple has made the photo storage unlimited, does this apply to previously taken photos? Will photos I took before iOS 8 automatically be backed up?

There's no unlimited photo storage. Photo Stream has always stored the last 30 days of photos, and they count toward you storage limit. iCloud Photo Library stores all your photos permanently, but DOES count toward your storage limit.

Okay, so iCloud Photo Library is something that, once I enable, it will immediately backup all my photos in the cloud, but not download them to each device? But I can still view them from each device? And does it backup all old photos?

Now I understand the difference between photo stream and the backup option, thanks.

EDIT: Think I found the most helpful webpage about this and answered my questions.
