I previously had a 2015 15" MBPro and just got a 13" M1 MBPro. On my 2015 intel machine, I created a system photo library on a Samsung T7 SSD. When I plug it in to my M1 computer, it reads the photos just fine. When I try to set the library on the external SSD to the system library on the M1, it just gives me the beachball (frozen, not even spinning) and mentioned the Photos app is not responding.

Any thoughts or ideas to fix this? Are the libraries between Intel and M1 not compatible? Anyone else have this issue?

I'm finding something similar, 2TB non-SSD drive formatted to Mac OS Extended set to system library and download originals from iCloud but slow as hell when accessing anything in the Photos app. Any ideas folks?

I have WD - easystore 10TB External USB 3.0 no problem.

Do you have iCloud turned on while trying to switch the library? I have had similar issue where the library was around 150GB and I tried to copy it over to the external HDD and try to switch library, at which point Photo would ask me to turn off the iCloud and THAT just made Photo unresponsive.

Thanks everyone for chiming in. It beach balled again the other night when I tried it and I just let it go overnight to see what would happen. It is working as expected now. Just wanted to post in case anyone else was having the same problem.
