I've just updated to Big Sur against my better judgment...

My Photos library will now not open without error messages as it tries to update. I have tried repairing the library (it fails) and run Disk Utility. I'm currently copying all the master photos to a new library, but it is 3tb so will takes ages...

Did anyone else experience this and find a fix. Its very frustrating as this is a basic thing that should just work...

Also my Messages is super buggy. :(

I'm in the same boat, my iMac with Mojave died (with hopes it can be fixed) anyway its gonna be weeks so got a new M1 MacBook Pro with a smaller drive so the music is now on an external HDD, I managed to copy the Music folder from my Time Machine backup.

But the next step to get them viewable on Big Sur is where its not working, hold down the option key to force Photos to select the external HDD copy it just won't start. Stuck on 0%. Its only about 500Gb in size and doesn't seem to start.
