I have a MBP with High Sierra. I threw in an external SD card for storage and have my "Photos Library" set to "live" on the external drive... but it appears the photos are still physically present on my internal drive. How is this happening and what do I need to change to clear up some space? Sorry if this is a dumb question.

Yes, it's the same "library" but different sizes. I can't seem to figure out why they're different. I store my iPhone camera roll in the cloud, and those photos sync with my MBP, but the library on my MPB lives on the external drive, so what's on my internal drive?
[doublepost=1516477307][/doublepost]You'll see the library location is set to be on the external drive, do you see settings that would explain why photos are still living on the MBP itself?

You can have more than one library. Only one active in the Photos app at once though. Go to Pictures in the Finder and open the Photos Library that's in there, see what's different and copy anything over you want to keep to the SD card, delete the Photos Library on your internal disk, and reopen the one on the SD card

i removed the SD card and when i launch photos there are no other libraries to choose.

interestingly enough, without the SD card in, the hard drive internal storage was renamed to just "system" instead of "photos".... there's no way "system" would take up ~52GB

That is indeed interesting. Even if not selectable, you don't have a Library file in your Pictures folder?
What's the SD card formatted as? There may be something the file system isn't comfortable with so it keeps a clone or something to satisfy the needs of Photos? That's not at all something I'm certain of - just a wild guess of a possible answer.
