Universal Photos not syncing

When I take a photo with my iPhone, isn't it supposed to automatically sync across all my iDevices and most importantly, on my iMac instantly?
It seems like it eventually does but seems to take FOREVER if not a day or so.
Is that normal?
Is there anything I can do to speed this process up?
Is it just me or are others having this same issue?
