I have a 256GB 12 pro. For my photos I use iCloud backup and have the setting to optimize storage. So on my 12 pro, the photos take up about 900 meg on the phone.

Yesterday I got a 256GB 13 pro max. I did the device to device transfer option and now that phone storage shows photos taking up over 40GB of space.

Seems odd to me. The 13 must have downloaded the full size photos from iCloud. Is that normal? The photos option on the new phone is still selected to optimize storage. Will the phone eventually compress the photos to a size similar to what’s on the 12?

Once your phone starts using up storage in other places it will start to optimize the Photos more.

Just thought it weird because my 12 pro is using less than 20% of available space (about 50GB) yet it fully optimizes the photos.

Whenever you restore on iOS or even setup as new it could take a couple of days for everything to index. Just leave your phone charging overnight (if you regularly don’t) and it will sort itself out.

Similarly...
[Via iUP] I updated from a 12 Pro to a 13 Pro, both 256 GB. After the device-to-device transfer, I noticed some alarming storage usage discrepancies.

12 Pro was using 184.4/256 GB.
13 Pro is using 223.9/256 GB.
Allegedly same data with a 39.5 GB delta. ¡No bueno!

As I dug into where the delta lived, I noticed Messages was my main offender.
12 Pro Messages = 14.95 GB
13 Pro Messages = 73.44 GB!
Where'd the extra 58.49 GB of Message data come from?

After a few conversations with Apple Support (at one point they suggested that "it might be the way the new device manages data" - ummm, what??), it sounds like a Reset and then Restore from my last 12 Pro backup is my next step. If I'm still seeing a massive delta, I may have to go in to a brick & mortar Apple store and begrudgingly see what exchanging my 256 for a 512 looks like, under the iUP of course. I'm anticipating a complete cluster and hoping Reset/Restore gets me where I need to be.

I've noticed the same with photos not optimizing with both my new iPad mini 6 and 13 Pro Max. The mini was restored from an iCloud back up and the 13 Pro Max with device to device transfer. On both devices iCloud storage is selected and optimization. The photos storage has ballooned such that I'm sure all the photos are full resolution.

I've had the mini for a few weeks and it's not changing so assume this is must be a bug.

Same thing on my 13 pro 256gb. I set it to optimise phone storage, but photos are still taking up loads of space on my iPhone storage.

I set my iPhone up as new.
