Not sure if this is an issue with the phone, computer or software but here goes.

I have a MBP-14 M1Max and an iPhone 13ProMax. When I plug in the phone via the Lightning cable and try to import photos into the Photos application on the Mac it usually (but not always) gets stuck in the "Preparing to import photos" stage. The phone appears in the browser to the left side of the screen.

I have searched ways to get past this and tried several. I have all 3 options in iCloud's Photos options turned off, that doesn't help any. Force-closing the camera app on the phone used to work on my Intel Mac but no longer seems to on the M1. I recall this being the case on my old iPhone 12ProMax as well.

The only one that seems to work consistently now is to put the phone into Airplane Mode, the photos can then be properly imported. While this is a decent workaround it is NOT a solution. Several times I forgot to take the phone out of Airplane Mode and missed calls and texts. Regardless it should not take doing this to import my photos.

Any ideas for a real solution?

I guess I must have been the only one here that has had this issue.

It seems to have fixed itself in iOS 16 or MacOS 12.6, it imports properly now.
