photos to ipad with iphoto6?

Do I need to buy iLife9 to be able to transfer photos from iPhoto to my iPad? Can I do this with iPhoto6 or do I need to update it? And if so, can I just update my iPhoto? I don't need iDVD and iGarage etc.
