I'm working on creating a masthead for a web page (for a site about "Moby Dick"), and I've found a good image, but clearly, the whale in the picture needs to be white. I've played around quite a bit in photoshop but haven't been able to get reasonable results.

Any suggestions for how to proceed? I'm comfortable selecting the whale, creating a mask, etc. What I'm having difficulty with is creating a realistic white color, with the proper shadows.
