I'm using an iMac(seen in sig.) and I had installed Photoshop, and while of course a little slow due to Rosetta it worked. Then maybe a week ago, it just seemed to stop opening up and crashing immediately. I'm running OSX 10.4.8, everything is properly updated and I've reinstalled photoshop a few times to no avial. The problem didn't seem to occur after any change, I might have just not noticed it though. Any advice?

Did you happen to use Monolingual to remove unneeded languages?

Do you have other apps that use Rosetta (like Office), and if so, are they still working?

Also, does it open if you remove all network connections? There was a bug that prevented older versions of Photoshop opening because they were busy looking for updates but disconnecting form the network/internet, opening the app and disabling this feature overcame it.

I haven't used Molingual at all and Office seems to work perfectly. Actually even other Adobe apps like InDesign and Bridge work fine.

And to remove the network connections, is that just turning off the AirPort? If it is then I tried it and no help.
Thanks for the surprisingly fast responses.

How far does it get in the opening process? Does the Dock icon just bounce few times and then quit, or does it fully open before quitting?

What happens if you create a new user account and try opening it from there?

Assuming you don't have an ethernet cable plugged in then yeah, turning off the AirPort would suffice.

Do it! You know you want to!

It'll help determine if the problem is exclusive to your Home folder.

The Icon bounces on the dock and then i get a message "The Application Photoshop quit unexpecedly Mac OS X and other applications are not affected. Click Reopen to open the application again. Click Report to see more details or send a report to Apple." I can then Close, Report..., Reopen. Reopen just leads to the same message.

Same problem

Have you installed any new fonts recently (or apps that'll install more fonts such as Office)?
I haven't installed any fonts and Office was installed before Photoshop actually and Photoshop didn't seem to have any problems.

It should be worth noting that I just tryed to open Compressor and had the same exact problems(and went through the same steps as suggested for Photoshop). Everything else in my apps folder seems fine, Final Cut Studio, iLife Apps, iWork etc.

Check your time zone in system preferences is correct.

My Photoshop (and other Adobe apps) wasn't working today. Changing the time zone to London - England (for some inexplicable reason it had got set to Cardiff - Wales), made it start working again.

photoshop won't open

Time zone was fine, changing it didn't make any difference. I really wish that had been the problem :(

i'm having the same problem. this isn't an isolated incident. won't work with different home folder. running mac book 10.4.8. help!
also, i have tried photoshop 7, CS and CS2 - none work!

Try restoring your preferences to default while starting Photoshop.

To restore all preferences to default settings
Do one of the following:

Press and hold Alt+Control+Shift (Windows) or Option+Command+Shift (Mac OS) as you start Photoshop or ImageReady. You are prompted to delete the current settings.

(Mac OS only) Open the Preferences folder in the Library folder, and drag the Adobe Photoshop CS Settings folder to the Trash.
New Preferences files are created the next time you start Photoshop or ImageReady.

Doing this has helped me recover from Photoshop non-start issues in the past; good luck. :)

Check your TWAIN devices

I was having a very similar problem when I noticed that startup was failing when loading TWAIN devices. Try deleting any unused TWAIN device (I just spotlighted mine), it seemed to work for me.

This worked for me, i was really getting annoyed with photoshop, i had been using it earlier in the day and it was working fine, then when i went back to it later in the day it just wouldnt work, the icon just bounced 4 times in the dock and did nothing, i had a look on here, checked the time zone and it was set to cardif wales, as soon as i set it back to London photoshop worked again, thanks Loge. I think if you remove the battery it defaults to cardif, thanks agin

This works also with a G3 BW Powermac. I kept going round in circles (Groundhog Day) trying to figure out how to startup PS 7 without it crashing. I had spent the day (literally) surfing the web and trying various things including re-installing as Archive & Re-install including save my settings. When I went to check my city in Date & Time, Edinburgh had changed to Cardiff somehow. Putting it back to Edinburgh and double clicking PS 7 and Hey Presto! - I'm back in business. Yipee!

Photoshop Won't Open!

Thanks to cjeder for the "old TWAIN" removal to get Photoshop working again.

Searched "twain" in spotlight, and sent two old twains from 2006 into the trash. Photoshop now works!!!! Thanks cjeder!!!!

Coming in late, but..

My Photoshop won't open in my new imac and I'm wondering if anyone has any ideas. I get a message that says 'An unexpected and unrecoverable problem has occurred because of a program error. Photoshop will now exit.' It is an old version, Photoshop 7, that I had working fine on my ibook, but now that I transferred it (via firewire) to my new imac it doesn't open. I've tried re-installing it from the original cd, and a variety of the suggestions listed ablove, but to no effect. I haven't deleted any old TWAIN mostly because I'm not sure which I should delete. Any suggestions?
