I have a perplexing problem.

Now using an iMac, that I bought only 3 weeks ago, having swapped from a PC, running XP.

I have photoshop CS5.

A couple of days ago, while dragging an image (photograph) onto a “canvas” ready for printing, I had a message that said…”the target document has a different depth than the source document. This may result in a lower than expected quality. Are you sure you want to proceed?”

I have a few preset canvas sizes for my Epson 4880, 17x73, 17x60, 17x12 etc. These were made on the old PC/photoshop CS3.

I now realize, what this message means! But not sure why its just flagged it up, when I have NEVER had it before. My “camera” image is 16 bit, (I assume) but the canvases are or have reverted to (for some unknown reason) only 8 bit. I have opened them, (the canvases) & changed them to 16 bit & hit “save” (as apposed to save as). This will not work, they can only be saved as a PSD file. As far as I am aware, I used 16 bit images on the PC, I have not made any changes anywhere, so why are they suddenly lower quality than I am used to? Is this a mac problem or a photoshop problem or maybe even a problem with Canon DPP, where the camera raws are converted to jpg???

I have done a huge amount of photoshoping in the last week & have 2 albums to send off to Poland to be printed & made up. And a load of digital multi-imaged prints. I don’t want to send them & they come back crap!

I have gone into “file/new…” and created a new canvas, at 16 bit, but when going & doing the same again, the box has ereverted to 8 bit, can I not set 16 bit by default somewhere within photoshop?

So…do I redo them from scratch (4 days work?) or open them & resave as 16 bit. Will they be as good having saved them to 16 bit, as they would have been, having been 16 bit from the outset? Anybody any idea, what has happened?
