Apple produce amazing computers and amazing OS's (or OSi, think about it), but Apple's market share just really pisses me of. Really, Apple computers do everything that the average user wants, and mostly does it ebtter than any PC, and still they cant shift these things.
Think of it like this, Apple's as gold, and PCs as silver. Even though gold is more its because its better, so people are willing to pay the extra. Now if Apple had any sense they would promote these things, seriously Apple cant sell gold.
I really do like Apple, It just pisses me of that all the ingredients are here for Apple to do so well, they spend so much on R+D yet they wont spend money on advertising

Its not that easy unfortunately. Advertising is part of it, but the premium prices are sitll there (and won't go away), and that drivse people away. Wintel machines are so pervasive that people don't consider apple machines often times, advertising be damned. Businesses sometimes run specialized apps not found for macs, so they won't buy often times (and cost is a factor for them too).

I know its different in other prats of the country, but apple advertises a lot around here (san francisco bay area). The stores are getting into more and more places, and they are really about advertising rather than a place to make sales.

In general thoug I agree. I'd love to see apple advertise a bit more on things other than the iPod. Has anyone ever once seen a commercial that has to do with OS X. I never have, and I think its a shame. I don't know if the general public relaly understands how different it is from windows and how much easier it can be to use.

I agree that Apple should market more, especially the OS itself. That is a big plus factor - go out and bash Windows in the ads - products will sell. Steveo needs to hire an aggressive ad campaign specialist.

Unfortunately, computers serve only as glorified typewriters for most people. Email and word processing. Weird as it may be, some people don't see a need to pay more for Apple, when a Dell costs a couple hundred bucks.

Here's the problem, IMHO, people are voluntarily or obliviously ignorant when it comes to computers. They need a computer, the get a PC. They dont' think about it. For example (this happend while I was waiting in a customer service line at BestBuy)Two people walked into BestBuy, bought a notebook, *bought* pop-up blocking sofware, and then handed it all over to the BestBuy technicians and *paid* for them to install it. They could have *very* easily brought the computer home, set it up, downloaded FireFox (to use in place of IE) for free, and that has pop-up blocking software in it already.

But they didn't care. They didn't know. I was talking to an associate of my Father's the other day, and he commented on how I was a Graphic Design student. He mentioned how you don't need Macs to work in Design these days, and that it's mostly just personal preference (according to the designers he knows). He said, "In fact, most places have to have PCs in their offices so they can email the rest of the people in the world." {sigh} It's depressing, but most people are just so ignorant when it comes to computers.

But hey, at least they knew that Apple is still in business.

On topic- Yes, Apple should do more public advertising.

Apple cannot realistically compete with the PC vendors who sell 500-700$ computers. It would be impossible. Apple makes their stuff too good looking and thus the cost is driven up not only by the components but also by the time/effort/money spent in the case design and manufacturing.

Yes, advertising is a part of it, and the rest Apple have done. Everything is in place its just promotion that needs to be done. It isnt all about price either, a premium price often means a premium poduct and if Apple bloody spend just two seconds on advertising they could create the image of superior products. Hell just avertise the mac as a fu*king ornament or a piece of modern art.

I understand what your saying, but this is exactly what I'm referring to. Apple has taken no steps to disassociate themselves from their incompatible image.

the same as some Cars only serve to get people to work and back, and thats it, so they buy a cheap honda or toyota...etc. And they dont see the need to pay more for a Mercedes-Benz, or a BMW, even though it would be a much more enjoyable ride to get to work and back in one

Sure, they produce amazing computers, but they don't ship them for nearly two months after they've been announced. That is what pisses me off!!!!

They are advertising, just not the way you are thinking. Everytime I turn on the TV I see ipod. every time I see a bus, I see ipod. What they are trying to do is to get more and more people to buy ipods. Then when the user finds out how great this little gadget is they start thinking about what else does Apple have. The person starts looking at computers and then most likely buys a computer. And judging by Apple's quarterly reports this is the truth.
Once the user plays with the Mac and shows his/her friends they start wanting Macs and so on and so forth.
This is just about exactly how I switched. I got an Ipod, and thought that this was the coolest thing ever. Than I got a Mac and thought this was the coolest thing ever. Then all my friends saw the Mac and also thought that it was the coolest thing ever.

Apples advertising is basically word of mouth. Would I necessarily do the same thing? No. I would probably do exactly what all of you are saying and advertise the computers as well as the ipod. But thats why Apple execs are Apple execs, and I'm posting on Macrumors.
