Happy Labor Day to all of those in the US. I’ve noticed the re-emergence of what I guess is now a bug. It happened last night while I was watching the house of the dragon.

Essentially, the problem occurs when watching a Dolby Vision show on my ATV 4K (2021). If I pause a program for a few minutes And then restart the program after a few minutes of being paused, the picture will darken slightly but noticeably and lose quality. This happens within a few seconds of playing.

I am not sure if this is a bug with my Sony OLED TV, or with my Apple TV 4K. When it happened last night, I rebooted everything and I could not get the picture to go back to the way it was looking before I paused the picture. And before I paused the picture it was looking quite good. However, the quality of the picture did not return until the Inside The Episode feature that follows the main show started playing. At that point, it seems a switch was flipped and everything looks good again.

So I have no idea what is going on and no idea whether the culprit is mySony A80J doing this or the Apple TV or a combination of both. Anyway, it’s just very discouraging when it happens. If anyone has any Ideas on what is causing this or any suggestions on how to fix this, i’d love to hear them. Thanks.

Which app are you using to play the movie? I think I had this issue a few times back when I subscribed to Netflix. I could sometimes get it to correct itself by closing the movie/stream, starting a different movie/stream, closing that one if it was streaming correctly, then returning to the movie/stream that had messed up. It was a royal PITA. As I recall the issue started right after a tvOS update. Coincidentally, after the recent tvOS update from a few weeks ago I started having issues in some apps including Philo, so perhaps more bugs were introduced.

The latest time was using the HBO Max app on the ATV 4K while watching the House of the Dragon. Something happens when it comes out of being paused.

I'm having all kinds of issues with the Philo app ever since the last tvOS update, as in multiple issues. I think perhaps that tvOS update made some changes that Philo hasn't properly addressed yet. Same could be true for HBO Max. It could be more Apple bugs or even just changes to the code that app developers haven't yet addressed. I'm about to the point now of switching back to using my Fire TV Cube rather than my ATV because the ATV seems rather wonky as far as tvOS goes. Hopefully Apple can get their act together and get the code cleaned up soon.
