I just recently got my Mac and I'm trying to take the background out of pictures, just leaving the actual people in the picture in the foreground. Does anyone know if there's an application already pre-installed on my Macbook that could help me do that, or do I have to buy something? Thanks.

You probably have to buy Photoshop.
Or you could have a look at GIMP.
But there's definitely nothing pre-installed to do it.

iPhoto can do limited things but not that.
photoshop elements takes some flack by some of the snobbish among us here but it's honestly a great app and affordable.

Adobe Photoshop is really the way to go. If you're going to be doing this sort of thing a lot you really might want to consider it. Some alternatives are Graphic Converter and GIMP. Photoshop & Graphic Converter aren't free, however GIMP is. 
I used to run Photoshop CS on my Intel iMac and the performance wasn't really too bad at all, but of course universal binaries are much nicer and take up less memory.
