I can't stop staring at it. It looks so good. I wanted the new hardware but my upgrade isn't here but man this is making me reconsider.

Those pictures are a bit misleading, as the 3GS doesn't look nearly so pixellated. If you compare the 4 pic with a real life 3GS the difference is not so pronounced.

Misleading, have you seen the phone in person.

Quotes from people who have...

looks insane in person
in complete awe
unbelievable

Unless you have a ridiculous high res image, you will not see the difference from a low resolution or scaled down iside by side picture taken from a distance. :)

The best comparison most fair comparison would be a side by side picture, 8 inches away, extremely high resolution image. I haven't seen any, this picture was obviously closer, see below for source.

As you can see, very noticeable difference even when scaled.

Those are close up photos...of course it looks different in real world usage...but the overall effect will be gorgeous on the retina display, even if a lot of people ALREADY don't notice pixels on the 3GS...

Looks nice, but I'd like to see how they compare at typical reading distances. That will be a better more accurate representation of the iPhone's 4 display.

WOW!! I'm so glad I have *young* eyes that can appreciate how high quality that display is. My mom has to have reading glasses to even use her iPod Touch lol... So I can brag all I want about my hi-rez iPhone 4 and she won't be able to tell one damn bit of difference haha

Completely agree this picture is misleading. The 3GS I'm looking at right now looks way better than the picture of the icons at the right. The lines that define the pencil tip/eraser and brush are clearly visible on the 3GS and nonexistent on that picture.

It's not misleading. If you think the current pixel density looks fine, then the new one will be four times better...

I like how the default 4.0 background image is still 320x480 even on the iPhone 4.

Is it that hard to put 640x960 resolution versions of the wallpapers in the iPhone 4 firmware? I know they exist, because the iPad has a 1024x1024 version of that exact wallpaper.

The source was shot on an angle.
