I have a task at hand to reduce the size of a picture file to 6k or less, to create an avatar for my friend. How do I go about this. The original size of the file is 44k.

You can change:
  • size dimensions (pixels)
  • color depth
  • compression format

Do you have PS? Try save for web... there you can set the maximum size!

Do you have photoshop, Gimp? This is probably the mose basic thing you can do to an image.

We need a little more info.

I agree with the previous posters. "saving for web" strips a file of it's resource fork and lowers the file size. Resizing or further compression also lower the size, for obvious reasons.

No Zed, I don't have photoshop. It sounds like save for web may be my best bet.
