Picture Transitions in iMovie '09

In a movie I'm making, I have some photos that I've inserted on top of a video so the audio from the video keeps playing through the photos. I can't figure out how to put transitions between these photos like there would be if it was just a regular audio track underneath them. Any help is much appreciated. Thanks!

As far as know, you can only add the "Transition boxes" on the lower part of video project. A not so rewarding way of doing it, is to make 2 different project's and then combining into each other, (unless it's that important to you).

I have tested on how i could try your idea:
I Split clip in video, where i would want the transition to occur for above picture(which i made as cut away pic), added transition box to lower video split section, which happened so fast, i hardly realized it.
Bottom line: It's a task.

My recommendation is to either detach audio and custom fit pic's, or maybe look into Opacity & Cutaway fade on the clip adjustments tool.
