Pictures sent from iOS Mail show up huge in Gmail web client - why?

Why does this happen, and how can we prevent this when sending mail in the future?

I've attached the my small (and cropped) screenshot image, and here is what my friend's Gmail web client displays.

He has to scroll to see the full image - crazy!

Thoughts?

Am I super-unique with this issue, for some reason?

I can't be, as a few friends have experienced this with their emails.
