First time this has happened with me.

I took a couple of photos with my iPhone and looked at the Camera Roll and they weren't there. I also took a couple of screenshots and they didn't show up on the CR either. I looked in every album and they weren't there. I have plenty of space, so that's not the issue.

I wonder where the photos are if they are actually still on the phone somewhere.

Anyway I resolved the issue for now but doing a soft reset. The photos are appearing on my Camera Roll as usual. Btw, I am still on iOS 17.
 
The what? Camera Roll is an Android or Windows term.
They should be in the Photos app at the end of existing photos. And in Recent days in 18.6
 
Well whatever you call it. Powering it off/on seemed to have fixed the issue. Even the photos I took that disappeared into the ether re-appearted after the restart. Hopefully that resolved it. Just strange in all the years I've owned an iPhone, this is the first time it has ever happened to me.
