Pinch not working in iPhoto

Pinch in the thumbnail view does work. However, not when I am looking at an individual picture. I should be able to zoom in with pinch and pan around with 2 fingers....correct?
I just visited the Apple Store today and had the same problem in iPhoto.
I could zoom in (in edit mode) but could never zoom out, the little thumb slider was kind of vibrating like I was almost doing it but not 'good enough' it seemed.
I don't know if there is a sensitivity setting or if i just wasn't doing it right.
