Apart from the home button, it actually looks pretty nice. I wouldn't personally want one but it does look very well done.

I can't see that happening. In specs, maybe, but not in name.
I think the 3GS naming, was just to bring the naming back in line, as the 2nd generation iPhone was called 3G, for the network speed.
It makes sense to keep the naming and numbering concurrent. The iPhone and iPod touch 5 will launch with iOS 5.
