Today, I inserted a DVD into my MBP (2.6GHz, mid 2007, the one with the problematic GeForce 8600M GT graphics processor).

The screen started becoming pixelated (see images), the computer became almost completely non-responsive, and I ended up having to do a hard shut-down. Tried it again and got the same problem, though I managed to kill the problematic programs w/out a shutdown. However the pixelated screen behavior continued - moving a window around resulted in its contents becoming a big blur.

Is this the "usual" problem with the 8600M, or something else?

I had the motherboard replaced a couple months ago - the 8600M went bad. But in that case, the screen was black, or the computer wouldn't boot at all. Very different from this case.

And, the customer service rep I spoke to claimed that the parts used in the repair did not suffer from the problem with the original bad graphics chip. But, I've never been able to find out if such a "fixed" chip was ever produced. Anyone know about that?
