Imac 2009 27" and just turned it on this AM and found the following picture. I can not get it unscrambled at all, even with rebooting.

I've done a few searches and see people discuss between logic board and graphics card and in some cases nothing has worked. Are these things I can fix myself or do i need to go into an authorized apple shop?

That is very likely a bad GPU and not something you will be able to fix yourself. Off to the Apple repair center you go. :(

Considering the age of the imac, is it worth putting the money into an older machince, or should I consider a new computer? I have never had a problem with this computer, but don't want to keep fixing things as we go down the road.

I suspect the repair for that will be more than it is worth. Maybe time to start looking for a new machine. You can get a little money for your broken machine on eBay.
