Pixellated background image in Safari 14

When I select a background image in Safari 14 on my 15" 2012 MacBook Pro (running Catalina), the image pixellates and is completely unrecognisable. This happens with all the supplied images or a selected image. I have three other Macs that don't exhibit this problem, it's only on this one and I have no idea how to cure it.
