Pixelmator for iOS Gains iOS 9 Support With Split-Screen Multitasking on iPad

Pixelmator for iOS was today updated with full support for iOS 9, enabling split-screen multitasking when used on an iPad. Pixelmator supports full Split View, which will allow the Pixelmator app to be used side-by-side with other apps on the iPad mini 4 and the iPad Air 2. On older iPads, split-screen multitasking will be limited to Slide Over.

"Pixelmator always takes advantage of the latest iOS features and technologies, and today we're thrilled to bring Pixelmator for iOS 2.1, which includes full support for iOS 9, 8K image support, and the ability for iPad users to work in Pixelmator and any other app at the same time with Split View and Slide Over." said Aidas Dailide, one of the founders of the Pixelmator Team. "With the new features in Pixelmator for iOS, it is even easier and more fun to edit images on the go."

Today's update also includes support for 8K resolution images, letting users edit photos that are up to 64 megapixels on their iPhone or iPad, and Spotlight Search on the iPhone and iPad will now index Pixelmator documents so they'll show up in search results.

There's a new "Open in Place" feature to open images from anywhere and save edits in the same place, and the "Save to Photos" feature will now open images from Photos and save edits onto the same image without creating a duplicate image.

Not rewritten of course, just modified. They have to respond to having their "screen" size changed on the fly- it's similar for making responsive layouts so the same app can support any iOS device size. Apps have to support a "compact" view so things fit properly when they're squeezed down to 1/2 or 1/3 their normal width.
There is one way Apple could have done it with no app modification, and that would be to include horizontal scroll bars. But that isn't a great experience for touch and only really works well in non interactive things like documents.

I wonder if Netflix and others are using some very non-standard way of playing video that isn't easy to make compatible with picture in picture... Ironically, having split view might be easier for them to do...

Smaller groups tend to get updates done faster. It's not uncommon.

I second this. It has been updated 8 times since iOS 9 was announced, so I'm surprised there was no PIP at launch. Maybe they're having problems fitting their ad system into it? At least split screen would allow viewing while doing something else. But many people don't have the Air 2 or newer.

As a side note, I wish Apple would allow PIP on the iPhone. Sometimes I'm mainly listening to something like a video podcast and only switch over to it when the action happens or if they're showing something interesting on the screen pertaining to what they are discussing. I guess overall PIP probably would be pretty tiny on the iPhone so maybe they decided it was best not to include it at all for edge use cases like mine. It also helps drive iPad sales which have slowed.

But yeah, hopefully Netflix is taking so long because they're putting some serious effort into a fully functional app. ...supporting pip, and bringing reviews in and making use of the queue. ...and making available the directors cuts and deleted scenes & extras... ...and putting some $ into developing a sci-fi show of their own to fit in their suite of excellent programs and fill the gap that Star Trek or whatever has left open for a decade or so... as long as I'm dreaming here.

That's good news. I can use it to view the master layout PSD for an app I designed that has 740 layers.

Nice going on the Spotlight support. The "Open in Place" is nice too. The change in "Save to Photos" kinda scares me a bit though because I have ALWAYS been told never to do that, ever.
