Did anyone else here notice how some of the 30-year-old MacInTalk / PlainTalk novelty voices had their names changed with Mac OS 13 Ventura? Sometimes I still use the voices for amusing purposes (like in some YouTube videos), ever since I first used some of the voices in high school on an old PowerMac G3 blue-and-white tower running Mac OS 9.

I noticed with Mac OS 13 Ventura, some of these novelty voices had their names changed. "Deranged" is now called "Wobble", "Hysterical" is now called "Jester", and "Pipe Organ" is simply named "Organ". "Princess" was also moved to the novelty voice selection and renamed "Superstar". I also noticed when testing some of the voices, their dialogue was changed. "Bad News" used to sing to the Funeral March "The light you see at the end of the tunnel is the headlamp of a fast approaching train", "Bubbles" used to say "Pull the plug! I'm drowning!", and "Deranged"/"Wobble" used to say "I need to go on a really long vacation", but now they all say the stock phrase "I sure like being inside this fancy computer". Though the other renamed voices retain their default test phrases ("Jester" still guffaws "Please stop tickling me!", "Organ" still sings "We must rejoice in this morbid voice", and "Superstar" still says "When I grow up, I'm going to be a scientist".)
All the other novelty voices are unchanged
I suspect these changes were done for political correctness reasons or something like that.

While this is kind of surprising, I am glad these voices are still available, and I remember being pleasantly surprised when I first got my eMac in 2009 that the voices were available in Mac OS X! (Though they generally aren't pre-installed by default but can be downloaded within the System Preferences.)

And now with Mac OS 14 Sonoma, all of their test lines have been changed to: "Hello, my name is [voice name]". It's kind of the end of an era, though at least those hilarious novelty voices are still around. (Unless there's a way to modify the config file or something so their sample lines can be changed to something custom?)
