I've been really lazy lately. By lazy, I mean REALLY lazy. I want to start working out at an actual gym. For those of you that have experience, are they decent? A small gym is being built in my house but I'd rather work out with the general public. It feels less awkward doing so. There's a Planet Fitness and then there's LA Fitness I'm considering. Looking for feedback from each gym. Thanks.

Planet Fitness first year cost me $199 prepaid. Prepaying means they don't have their hands in my checking account or credit card. First impressions were very good, especially for the low cost.

I pay $10 a month. They bill my credit card automatically.

Personally, I have a membership at LA Fitness because that's what's closest to my house.

But before you sign up, why not do a free trial at the gyms? I know LAF does a 14-day trial and I'd be surprised if PF didn't also offer a trial membership.

Planet fitness all the way for best bang for your buck!

Great equipment too and very clean also

I keep hearing issues about cramped space at PF though. And the juice bar at LAF seems awesome. But meh, I dunno.

I have a Bally membership that was converted into an LA Fitness membership. I'm in the $10/mo club, and I don't use it at all. I bought it when I worked near a Bally and would go there during my lunch break.

I agree with the others about trying each one out before making a decision. I actually prefer working out at a smaller local gym now. I take MMA classes four times a week, and I don't see myself ever going back to a franchise gym.

I can't say for any other clubs but I just joined planet fitness almost a month ago and gotta say its been great. Very low cost compared to others offered my area, not limited to one location, open 24 hours, great equipment, and the whole no judgement zone...it's just a comfortable place to work out.

Has the Luke Alarm ever gone off, or whatever it's called?

You mean that alarm that goes off when people slam the free weights to the ground? If so, yes a couple of times. Scared the crap out of me first time I heard it.

Any other gym is better than Planet Fitness. They cater to people that lift 5 pound pink dumbbells. If you make any sort of noise with weights, the lunk alarm goes off... which scares the living piss out of people way more than weights hitting the ground. It's kind of a natural thing to make noise when you're deadlifting several hundred pounds from the floor.

I'm weak though, sounds like it would suit me if everyone's doing 5lb :)

I just think it's immoral to give money to a gym that segregates people like that... especially with something as obnoxious as the lunk alarm. Granted, their gym their rules, but those are some stupid rules. Big, muscular guys don't scare away customers. The only thing I hate is when some guy that just squatted 600 pounds leaves all the weight on the bar and then just moves on. That's just rude.

Well, from another persons perspective, it does make me feel awkward to see a huge body builder there while I'm not.
