When cleaning the inside of an iMac G4 20", I noticed that there appears to be some sort of plastic film on top of the CPU. I noticed this when removing old thermal paste, as the old paste have leaked under this plastic film.

What is the purpose of the film? And can it be removed, so that it is possible to remove all old thermal paste residue?

EDIT: Opened up another of my iMacs G4, and same thing on that one,i.e. plastic film on CPU.

I have found others with the same question, but not any clear answer.
