Plastic wear on the Macbook?

A buddy of mine is looking to save $200 and get a Macbook instead of a Macbook Pro, but he's concerned about the "wear of the plastic" on the Macbook.

Is this a concern? Have there been issues?

Can they elaborate? I just have scratches on my Macbook. I didn't think it was necessary to protect it with a shell.

What he means is discolouration (regarding the *current* white Macbook.)
