Is there any reason to prefer mkv over mp4 for this?
HDR10 files in mp4 play very well iTunes for me.
I may re-test tonight, but I have the impression, that when plex app on aTV 4K did not play back in HDR, then plex app on my AndroidTV did.
Will take a look and post my results here.

I mean to play mkv files on local network, not itunes movies ...

The next version of Infuse will feature HDR support.

Infuse (current version) play hdr files without hdr or can not play them for now? Have you tried with vlc too?

Infuse plays everything now, even files tagged with HDR (including uncompressed UHD rips etc), but the colours won't look right until the new version hits within the next week or so.

That I did not get. I play all my movies on my local network, from my DAS connected to Mac Mini. I just use iTunes as server and Home Sharing as protocol - ie all standard Apple.
Works without a problem. Now also for UHD movies encoded in HEVC, both SDR and HDR.
Indeed, files need to be in MP4, not MKV. But that is a trivial thing to resolve.

Media info can be seen on last screenshot in my post: #62

MrMMC 3.1 can play UHD (4K, HDR) as well. I don't have a 4K TV (yet.. there seems to be an interesting price drop for LG OLEDs).

It's not completely clear to me how HDR is handled by the back-end of the AppleTV. I have 4K MKVs with HDR (you can check with Mediainfo, look for BT.2010 color space, luminance min/max and luminance set points). I guess an application like Infuse or MrMMC has to tell tvOS it's playing HDR content in either DV or HDR10 so tvOS can adapt it to the selected output/display format.
