iOS cannot play mkv, avi video by default.
Users can convert mkv, avi video to mp4 format to play on their devices.
But converting task takes a lot of time.

There are many applications that can play mkv, avi on iOS directly.
One of these applications is HD Player.

HD Player is a hardware acceleration enabled video player. It can handle Full HD, 2K and 4K video smoothly but consumes less power.

HD Player on App Store

itunes wont let avis or mkv files to be transferred onto ipad so how do you even play it using those apps ?

Once you have installed VLC for iOS, go to iTunes / your iOS device / Apps, scroll the page down and add the files here :

My favourite feature of VLC on iPad app is the Network stream.

Allows me to access my Plex Server contents or my media contents in my WD My Cloud using DLNA.

The only downside that it has to be in the local network, would be awesome if I can access them remotely, WAN connection.

Nplayer is very good - and very fast browsing a synology nas using ftp.

Also keep VLC on your ipad for any files with DTS audio... It's the only one i know that plays that audio codec.
