Is there any way to play a movie in the background (using the video-out cable to display it on my mini-van's tv screen) so I can use Google maps at the same time? I want to be able to check my location using GPS while playing a video for the kids.

I thought about trying to use Backgrounder and enabling the video player but can't find an appropriate bundle identifier.

thanks!

No, I don't believe so. Backgrounder just keeps connections alive, keeps the state active, etc. I don't believe it allows for 2 or more apps to fully utilize the CPU, etc like a normal computer would be able to. Also, the iPhone doesn't have multi-screen capability like a laptop may have so I don't think you can display one on it's screen and then use TV-out for another.
