Playback Stuttering & Choppy - Fine once in a sequence

Trying to tear through a large DV clip I get a really stuttered playback.

I've tried all sort of settings. When I move the pieces into a sequence, everything plays fine?

Any ideas?

System has 8 gigs of ram, full 2.5 dedicated to FCP
