Playing Blu-Rays via thunderbolt to external TV with HDMI?

I know MBs cant play Blu-Rays and be viewed on the laptop screen, but can they play blu-rays to an external source? Or do I have to Bootcamp and use Windows? If the latter, can I still access the thunderbolt port in bootcamp to send the signal to the external source HDMI?

Not sure if this helps you but I create iso versions of all my blu rays and play them on my mac via Mac Blu-ray Player. This will allow direct playing on the macbook screen. You can also connect for instance a 1080p television via HDMI and watch that way.
