What resolution is best for playing Civilization V (via Steam) on an rMBP? Any good default settings for everything else (within the game) too?

(Also, what IS the "Best for Retina" default resolution? It doesn't say in System Preferences.)

best for retina is 2880x1800 x 0.5 scaling. = looks like 1440 x 900.

Theres an enhanced version of the game for retina on the app store. Maybe an update for the steam version is coming?

I've been using 1920x1200 under windows for the game (the mac build has never ran quite as well). Anything more than that, the performance degrades too much and the interface is impossible to read.

The version of Civ V I bought on Steam yesterday is 1.01.7.05 - you'd think that was an earlier version, but it has support for the retina resolutions. In particular, two of them:

2880x1800 (HiDPI)
2560x1600 (HiDPI)

So I can't say definitively whether this is the same version, but it appears to be. I can run it at native res and it runs fine. Of course, the rMBP gets hot as all heck when I do that, but it runs fine. :)

So do you set the res in the game to one of those resolutions? (How do you know those resolutions are "retina" optimized?

Do you set the other settings for default or tweak them so the game looks better?

It can be set at any time. Before the game starts or during the game. In the options menu.

Only the 2880x1800. That's the native resolution of the screen, so I'm assuming that means it's optimized for retina. Can't say 100%, but can't imagine what wouldn't be optimized at that res.

I've only had two play sessions and thus far I've left everything else on default. Most of the settings are pretty low, to be fair, but the game looks pretty good considering it's a turn-based strategy game (not exactly Diablo 3 or CoD).
