Just curious,

Would playing intensive games while the laptop is plugged in decrease battery life over time? Or is it better to play on battery and then charge it?

Do as you want. The battery does not care, if a game is being played. During CPU intensive tasks the battery is drained faster. If one does CPU intensive tasks while the power adapter is connected, the battery is quite happy to have some free time.
